Amber gems with insect inclusions are truly windows to the past. The fossilised remains contained in amber show complete creatures of millions of years ago, not calcified bones or impressions in sandstone, and as such have added greatly to our knowledge of prehistoric times. Some amber (e.g. Burmite) is over 120 million years old, and dates from the time of the dinosaurs.

40 Million Years Old Baltic Amber Cabochon with insect inclusion
sold
This unusual Baltic amber cabochon (23.7mm x 17mm x 3.5mm) is a fascinating window to an ancient world. It contains a small long legged fly and some amber flow lines.
This is just waiting for a creative artist to make an unusual item of jewellery
This piece of 15mm x 16mm Dominican amber contains two good examples of biting midges and, of botanical interest, a portion of leaf. It also contains a tiny moving bubble near an interesting formation in the middle of the amber. Beside the small drop of water (known as an enhydrous) containing the bubble is a star-like inclusion more typical of the oak hairs found in Baltic amber. Another little bug lurks down in the corner of this attractively coloured gem.
